I originally chose flour milling because it was the first job offer I received and it seemed like it would be fun. Having grown up on a farm, I thought being part of the food chain would be cool, but I had no idea what I was really getting into. I was an engineer who wanted to work in operations and manufacturing instead of sitting in front of a desk doing design work. From the start, I’ve loved the variety of responsibilities I’ve had working in the mills, and how every day is a little different. Working in a flour mill is a job where you can be as hands-on as you want to be in making changes and improvements in the process and with your team. I’ve worked at five different mills so far, and each one has its own unique character and personality. Whether older equipment or brand new, there are things to learn and be challenged by, so no day in flour milling is ever boring! The people I’ve worked with through my career are genuine and are the reason I stay in flour milling – they truly have been my family, no matter which mill I’ve worked at. If you are looking for a career where you can have fun and make a difference and help feed people, flour milling is definitely one to consider!
